5 fall/winter activities that aren't the gym:

1. Indoor Climbing or Bouldering

Local climbing gyms are open 12 months a year and are a great place to hang out with friends. You get a serious workout from stretching and strengthening your way through the routes. Don’t feel intimated. There are plenty of introductory classes and climbers are generally happy to share their passion with newbies.

2. Winter Cycling

Whether it’s to maintain an active commute or because you can’t bear to hang up your ride all season, you can cycle through a Canadian winter with a few basic tips:

Switch to wet-weather lube
Make sure your lights are bright enough
Consider winter specific break pads
Get some fenders
Add tires with heavier tread or use studded tires
Get yourself a bright jacket, rain pants, shoe covers, warm inner layers and some winter cycling gloves.

3. Downhill Skiing

There’s no better way to spend the snowy season than at your local resort making fresh tracks. In colder areas you’ll want an insulated jacket and pants, and in warmer areas and spring-like conditions opt for a lightweight, breathable shell and warm baselayer. If you’re interested in exploring the backcountry make sure you have the right gear and have completed the necessary training, for example AST (Avalanche Skills and Training).

4. Winter Running

Think of your winter running route like an obstacle course that with a little skill and the right gear you can navigate like a pro. Black ice and unshoveled drives are managed with slip-on shoe traction spikes, and clothing with reflective detail keep you visible during darker days. Look for warm performance fabrics like technical fleece and merino to wick away moisture. Use a light shell to protect against harsh winds. MEC hosts free run crew meet-ups all year – rain, shine or snow.

5. Snowshoeing

There are snowshoes designed for running, mountaineering or just walking around the block with your family. A snowshoe’s wide base keeps you floating over freshly fallen flakes. MEC rents snowshoes, so you can see what kind of snowshoe suits you best.
